Olivia Rodrigo has expressed her admiration for Justin Bieber’s performance at this year’s Coachella festival. In an interview with Audacy Check In released on April 23, the rising pop star reflected on several acts she attended during the festival’s second weekend, highlighting Nine Inch Nails and David Byrne before singling out Bieber’s Saturday night set. “I did see Bieber, it was so epic,” she shared with host Bru. “I loved it.”
Rodrigo was particularly moved by Bieber’s rendition of “Baby,” the lead single from his debut album. “When he sang ‘Baby,’ I think I lost my mind,” she recalled. “I thought it was so beautiful the way he did it with the laptop, too. It almost felt like he was paying homage to his younger self, having his younger self on screen, seeing him in real life so happy. It was really powerful.”
Bieber’s performance garnered significant attention at this year’s festival. In addition to serenading Billie Eilish and duetting with SZA, he engaged the audience by searching through YouTube videos of his younger self during his set.
On the same day, Rodrigo made a surprise appearance during Addison Rae’s set, performing “Drop Dead,” the lead single from her upcoming album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, scheduled for release on June 12. “I’ve known her [Rae] for so long,” Rodrigo stated during the interview. “She has such a vision and is such a positive, wonderful person and I’m just so happy she’s having so much success.”
She elaborated on how her cameo materialized, saying, “We’re friends. We text all the time, and I text her, and I was like, ‘Maybe I could come out at Coachella. I feel like the song is so fun and free and very you.’ And she was so stoked.”
