HBO Shares a Sneak Peek of Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre in the New DC Series “Lanterns”
HBO Max has unveiled a preview of its 2026 programming lineup, featuring a teaser for the upcoming series Lanterns, an HBO Original production in collaboration with DC Studios.
The series stars Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler portraying Hal Jordan. In the newly released teaser, Pierre’s character asserts, “I’ve trained my whole life for this,” while Chandler’s character responds, “You’re not ready to get up in front of the class until the ring says you are.” The preview showcases intense scenes, including Hal Jordan abandoning a moving vehicle and John Stewart soaring off a hill, alongside Stewart sprinting against traffic on a highway.
Lanterns is designed by a creative team that includes Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King. The narrative centers on John Stewart, a new recruit, and Hal Jordan, a veteran Lantern. The duo finds themselves embroiled in a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.
Joining the lead actors are a talented ensemble cast, which features Kelly MacDonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Sherman Augustus, J. Alphonse Nicholson, Jason Ritter, Nathan Fillion, Chris Coy, and Paul Ben-Victor. The series is anticipated to debut in 2026.
In an earlier interview with Men’s Health, showrunner Chris Mundy likened Lanterns to a "buddy cop show" infused with superhero elements. He explained, “Our show is in a lot of ways about replacement—when should someone step aside and when is it time for the next person to take the reins?” Mundy further emphasized the dynamic between the two main characters, noting the significance of balance in their relationship. He praised Aaron Pierre’s dual presence of strength and thoughtfulness, stating, “That push and pull between those two characters is really important.”
The teaser for Lanterns is now available for viewing, along with a selection of exclusive first-look photos that highlight key moments from the series.
