City Scrambles to Fix Pothole After Dozen Cars Get Damaged
Pothole Damage Affects 15 Vehicles in West Adams
LOS ANGELES — A significant pothole emerged Sunday night on South La Brea Avenue, resulting in damages to at least 15 vehicles in the West Adams neighborhood. This incident follows several days of heavy rainfall across the Los Angeles area.
The pothole appeared around 8 p.m. in the northbound lanes, close to Westhaven Street. By 8:30 p.m., multiple drivers reported sudden impacts, with many hearing loud popping noises as they struck the hazard. Several vehicles sustained damage to more than one tire, prompting drivers to pull over to assess their cars.
Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department responded promptly to the scene and temporarily blocked the street to prevent further incidents, coning off the area for safety.
This incident highlights a broader issue arising from the recent storms in Southern California, which have affected drivers across Los Angeles County. Local auto repair shops are witnessing an uptick in customers seeking fixes for blown tires and bent wheels, as the wet conditions have worsened road conditions.
Potholes typically form after heavy rainfall when water seeps into pavement cracks, compromising the structural integrity of the road.
City officials, together with Caltrans, have indicated that repair crews are actively addressing the situation, working extended hours to manage the increasing number of pothole reports since the storms commenced. The city’s Bureau of Street Services aims to repair reported potholes by the next business day.
Drivers can alert authorities about roadway hazards by contacting the Bureau of Street Services, calling 311, or using the MyLA 311 smartphone application.
