Stephen Colbert Sits Down with Barack Obama for Late Show’s Final Weeks: “Exciting News Ahead”
Stephen Colbert and Barack Obama to Reunite for Final Interview Ahead of Late Show’s Conclusion
In a significant upcoming event, Stephen Colbert will host former President Barack Obama for a final interview on May 5, marking a notable moment just ahead of the late-night show’s conclusion. This appearance will occur just days before the opening of Obama’s presidential library, adding to the occasion’s prominence.
Colbert revealed the news during a recent broadcast of The Late Show, expressing excitement while addressing the audience at New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater. “Folks, before we get started, I have a quick but exciting announcement,” Colbert stated. “Tuesday, May 5, here on The Late Show, in his first interview from the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, I will be sitting down with former President Barack Obama,” he said, prompting cheers from the audience.
In a social media post, the Obama Foundation succinctly announced the upcoming interview, stating, “Couch booked. Volume up. Ready to go.”
This interview adds to the history between Colbert and Obama, who have shared the stage multiple times. Colbert has interviewed the 44th President three times during his tenure on The Colbert Report, as well as in 2016 and 2020 for The Late Show. Colbert also served as the master of ceremonies for a significant fundraiser featuring both Obama and former President Bill Clinton in March 2024.
The Obama Presidential Center, which began construction in 2021, is slated to open to the public on June 19, following a dedication ceremony filled with celebrity guests. Colbert’s The Late Show is set to air its final episode on May 21, 2026.
Following Colbert’s departure, Comics Unleashed will take over the time slot on CBS, with Byron Allen having acquired the show’s spot. David Letterman recently commented on these changes, suggesting that the network’s financial strategies are driving the programming decisions, noting, “They don’t want to spend any money, so they’re going to make money.”
As the end of an era approaches for The Late Show, the upcoming interview with Obama promises to be a memorable highlight in Colbert’s legacy as a late-night host.
