Ventura Man Admits Guilt in Minor Trafficking Case Months After Getting Out of Prison
LOS ANGELES – Kai Whitney Sommers, a 38-year-old registered sex offender from Ventura County, has pleaded guilty to federal charges of sex trafficking involving two minors. This plea follows his release from state prison just months earlier, where he had served time for prior child sex crimes.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Sommers was released from California state prison in June 2023 after completing a sentence for statutory rape and lewd acts with a child. Despite being under supervision with restrictions on internet access, he utilized digital devices in August to engage with a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old through a messaging app targeted at teens.
Court documents reveal that Sommers coerced the victims into taking photographs, which he then used to create fraudulent sexual service advertisements on an adult website. He misrepresented their ages, claiming they were 18 years old. Additionally, Sommers posed as the victims during negotiations with adult clients and successfully convinced one victim to meet two men for commercial sexual acts.
The plea agreement leaves several questions unanswered. It does not disclose the identities of the adult clients who responded to Sommers’ advertisements or indicate whether any further charges are being pursued against them. Furthermore, Sommers admitted to possessing nearly 150 images of child sexual abuse material (CSAM), but the full extent of his digital distribution efforts remains under investigation.
