UCLA Pulls Off an Impressive Upset Against No. 4 Purdue Thanks to Donovan Dent and Tyler Bilodeau
UCLA Bruins Achieve Stunning Upset Over No. 4 Purdue
In a thrilling matchup at Pauley Pavilion on Tuesday night, the UCLA Bruins delivered a remarkable performance, defeating the No. 4 ranked Purdue Boilermakers with a score of 69-67. This victory marks a significant highlight for the Bruins this season.
UCLA’s head coach, Mick Cronin, had urged his team in recent weeks to elevate their intensity and consistency. His calls for action were evidently answered, as the Bruins improved their game enough to earn a crucial win, moving to a 13-6 overall record and 5-3 in the Big Ten Conference. Meanwhile, Purdue fell to 17-2, with a conference record of 7-1.
Donovan Dent played a pivotal role in the upset, showcasing his talents with a double-double, contributing 23 points and 13 assists. The second half saw Dent particularly shine, orchestrating the offense and making key plays. Despite Purdue’s impressive performance at the free-throw line, converting six of seven attempts, turnovers in critical moments played a decisive role in their first Big Ten loss of the season.
With 1:56 remaining, Purdue held a 67-61 lead. However, Dent’s timely three-pointer cut the deficit, followed by a steal from teammate Trent Perry, leading to a layup by Eric Dailey Jr. that reduced the Bruins’ deficit to just one point with under a minute left.
Following a timeout from Purdue, the Boilermakers committed another turnover, allowing UCLA to regain possession. Dent received the inbound and passed to Tyler Bilodeau, who then hit a crucial three-pointer, giving UCLA a narrow 69-67 lead with just eight seconds on the clock. The Bruins called another timeout to strategize defensively, successfully holding off a last-second attempt from C.J. Cox of Purdue, ensuring an exhilarating finish to the game.
This victory not only serves as a testament to UCLA’s potential this season but also reinforces the ongoing narrative of fierce competition within the Big Ten.
