Tom Hanks Takes on the Role of Abraham Lincoln in Starburns Industries’ ‘Lincoln In The Bardo’ with Playtone at the Helm
Tom Hanks to Portray Abraham Lincoln in ‘Lincoln in the Bardo’
Tom Hanks, celebrated for his diverse roles in period films and biographical portrayals, is set to take on a new challenge: playing Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, in the upcoming film Lincoln in the Bardo. This project, produced by Starburns Industries, will utilize a unique combination of live-action and stop-motion animation, adapting the acclaimed novel by George Saunders, which has earned accolades including the 2017 Booker Prize.
Hanks will not only star in the film but also serve as a producer through his Playtone label, alongside partner Gary Goetzman. The production is slated to take place in London. Lincoln’s legacy—as a pivotal figure in abolishing slavery and navigating the Civil War—will be central to the narrative.
Saunders is directly involved in the adaptation, with Oscar-nominated filmmaker Duke Johnson, known for Anomalisa, set to direct and produce the project. This marks Starburns Industries’ first foray into production following the recent establishment of its film fund.
Lincoln in the Bardo promises to delve into one of Lincoln’s most profound personal experiences, focusing on his bond with his recently deceased 11-year-old son. The film aims to explore deep themes of love, empathy, and resilience in the face of grief, featuring a rich ensemble of characters that includes both historical figures and fictional creations.
Johnson will collaborate with Paul Young and Devon Young Rabinowitz in the production, while Steven Shareshian, Aaron Mitchell, and Saunders will serve as executive producers. Hanks is represented by CAA and Greenberg Glusker.
