Matt Bomer Shares Exciting News About Songs He Recorded with Diane Warren for the ‘Magic Mike XXL’ EP
In a recent interview, Emmy-nominated actor Matt Bomer revealed that he has a collection of unreleased tracks featuring renowned songwriter Diane Warren. These “rough tracks” are linked to Bomer’s work in the 2015 film Magic Mike XXL.
During an interview with Josh Horowitz on Happy Sad Confused, Bomer discussed the genesis of these songs, which evolved after the success of the original Magic Mike in 2012. He described how co-star Channing Tatum encouraged him to entertain the crew by singing, leading to his cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Lately.” Producers were impressed enough to include Bomer in the music for the sequel, where he performed a rendition of D’Angelo’s “Untitled (How Does It Feel).”
Bomer recounted, “So we recorded a couple songs for the soundtrack, kind of just on a lark — although one of them was recorded by Ludwig Göransson, who just won his [third] [sic] Oscar, because he was working with Donald Glover, who was also on XXL.” Despite unexpected success on Spotify, Bomer faced challenges in moving forward with a full album after interests from Tower Records. “They were like, ‘Do you write music?’ And I was like, ‘I’ve written music since I was a kid,’” he added.
Bomer ultimately penned three songs but grew hesitant about the project amid logistical complications. “If you think the entertainment/acting side of things is crazy, the music industry’s like, ‘No, no, dog, watch this. It is some craziness,’” he noted.
Additionally, while Bomer collaborated with the “total legend” Warren, he expressed reservations about releasing their work. “I knew that if I released them into the world, I was gonna have to go on talk shows and do them, and tour around the country with them,” he explained. “I was like, ‘You know what? I love her music, but if I’m gonna do this, it has to come from me,’ and so we never released it.”
