Ted Turner Passes Away at 87, Leaving Lasting Impact on Media Landscape
Today marks the passing of Ted Turner at the age of 87, prompting significant reflections on his profound influence on media. David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, acknowledged Turner’s legacy in a heartfelt statement to his team, emphasizing the transformative nature of Turner’s work in the industry.
“He believed deeply in the power of ideas, in doing things differently and in building platforms that could inform, inspire, and connect people around the world,” Zaslav stated. “That belief inspired generations of leaders, myself included. He did not just disrupt media. He transformed it.”
Zaslav recounted a memorable meeting with Turner in Washington, D.C., shortly after the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery in April 2022, where they discussed the future challenges and responsibilities facing media brands. “I think about that conversation often,” he remarked.
The impact of Turner on CNN cannot be overstated; the network became part of Warner Bros. in 1996 after Time Warner’s acquisition of Turner Broadcasting. This deal made Turner one of the largest shareholders in the company, which has seen numerous ownership changes since.
Rupert Murdoch, Chairman Emeritus of Fox Corporation, also paid tribute to Turner, praising his vision. “Ted Turner’s vision for 24-hour cable news transformed the media industry and gave viewers everywhere a front seat to witness history unfold,” Murdoch stated. “His impact as a trailblazer has left an indelible mark on our cultural landscape. He was a great American and friend.”
In a memo to WBD staff, Zaslav expressed deep sorrow at Turner’s passing and highlighted his numerous contributions to the media world. He described Turner as a “visionary, a trailblazer, and a foundational force” behind many current Warner Bros. Discovery brands.
Zaslav noted Turner’s pioneering of CNN in 1980, underscoring his belief in the necessity for real-time news coverage, which continues to shape journalism today. Additionally, he credited Turner with redefining sports television through the launch of TNT and creating Turner Classic Movies, ensuring that the history of cinema is celebrated.
Beyond his work in media, Turner was a passionate philanthropist who dedicated himself to causes related to journalism, culture, the environment, and the betterment of future generations. Zaslav extended his condolences to Turner’s family and all those impacted by his visionary leadership, stating that it is now the responsibility of Warner Bros. Discovery to honor Turner’s legacy.
“Ted Turner changed our industry forever. I’m grateful for his courage, his imagination, and the lasting mark he leaves on Warner Bros. Discovery and the world,” Zaslav concluded.
