Photographer Josh Shinner has been behind the lens for several memorable moments involving Kate Middleton and Prince William, recently unveiling one of his most cherished images of the royal family. “It’s been a real privilege to photograph the @princeandprincessofwales over the last couple of years, and this might be my favorite shot to date,” he noted in a caption accompanying a candid family photo posted on his Instagram account.
This heartwarming black-and-white photograph captures Prince William lying on the ground, flanked by his three children. Princess Charlotte, age 10, beams at the camera, while her brothers, Prince George, 12, and Prince Louis, 7, gaze adoringly at their father.
The image first appeared on the official Instagram account of the Prince and Princess of Wales in a Father’s Day tribute in June. The post humorously contrasted this playful moment with a more formal family portrait, captioned as a “before and after” of family life.
Shinner has also documented other special occasions for the family, contributing images for Prince George’s birthday in July and Prince Louis’ birthday in April, all stemming from the same family shoot.

Shinner began collaborating with the royal family when he captured a photograph for their 2023 Christmas card, a candid shot that showcased the family in a relaxed setting, diverging from the more traditional royal portraits.
In a previous interview, Shinner expressed that establishing a comfortable rapport with his subjects is crucial for capturing great portraits. “I’ve always loved portraiture, and the people I most enjoy photographing are those that take some warming up,” he shared. He added, “The feeling when it all comes together and you make something you’re both happy with is hard to beat.”
