Sources close to Rob and Michele Reiner are refuting claims that the couple did not dedicate enough time to their son, Nick.
“To say that Rob and Michele weren’t as loving as parents get or that they didn’t try everything they could to support Nick is an insult to every parent, especially those with a child suffering from mental health issues,” a family insider stated. This sentiment was echoed by another source who noted that Rob, a distinguished filmmaker, and Michele, a producer and photographer, worked tirelessly to juggle their careers while raising their children. “Their kids are all adults now, and they had tried so hard for years,” the source added.
Despite the family’s efforts, a second insider remarked, “At the end of the day, Nick didn’t take the help seriously. This was true for years and years. His issues were far, far out of his parents’ control.” The insider emphasized that Rob and Michele did their utmost to protect their family, including Nick.
“Nick lied a lot,” the insider explained. “He was unreliable, but he was also convincing and intelligent. His family was empathetic to how much his struggles contributed to his behavior. They never lost hope in him, even when he was scaring them or making their lives harder.”

This week, political commentator Megyn Kelly sparked controversy during her SiriusXM show by suggesting that Rob and Michele’s focus on their careers may have detracted from their parenting, which led to Nick’s current situation.
Kelly’s comments ignited significant debate, as many criticized her statements on social media. One commenter expressed disappointment in her remarks, stating, “I was disappointed on your commentary on their parenting style,” while another added, “Kindness is what we need these [sic] Megyn, not judgement.”
Nick, 32, has been vocal about his battles with drug addiction and homelessness in various public discussions. He estimated that he had undergone treatment for drug issues 18 times during his adolescence. In a 2016 interview, he shared that his first rehabilitation experience occurred around his 15th birthday, although he often refused to return to treatment afterward.
“If I wanted to do it my way and not go to the programs they were suggesting, then I had to be homeless,” he stated, referencing periods of homelessness in several states, including Maine, New Jersey, and Texas.

Nick collaborated with Rob on the film Being Charlie, which draws upon elements of their own experiences. Released in 2015, the semi-autobiographical film addresses addiction and was seen as a means to mend their strained relationship.
According to the family insider, “They hoped ‘Being Charlie’ would help build Nick’s confidence in the industry and in himself.” In September, Rob remarked during an interview on NPR’s Fresh Air that he consistently prioritized his children, including Nick, Jake, and Romy, balancing his career and family life.
“I was never, ever too busy,” Rob emphasized. “If anything, I was more hands-on and trying to do whatever I thought I could do to help. I’m sure I made mistakes and, you know, I’ve talked about that with him since.”
Rob reiterated this commitment during a 2016 interview with Access Hollywood, stating, “He’s my son, I love him. He’s more important than anything that could happen to me.”
Nick faces two charges of first-degree murder related to the deaths of his parents, whose bodies were discovered in their Los Angeles home. Following the incident, he was denied bail. The county medical examiner’s office subsequently confirmed that Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, died from “multiple sharp force injuries” on December 14.
