Ohio Man Found Guilty of 2018 Hotel Rape in Oxnard
VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. — Christopher Baum, a 59-year-old resident of Fairlawn, Ohio, was convicted by a jury of felony forcible rape in connection with a 2018 assault at an Oxnard hotel. The jury also confirmed that the crime involved “great violence,” leading to an aggravated finding.
The incident occurred on October 14, 2018, when Baum and the victim were staying together at the hotel. Following a dispute that day, the victim went to sleep. She later awoke to find Baum on top of her, where he restrained her arms and proceeded to assault her despite her repeated objections.
In the aftermath of the attack, the victim reported experiencing considerable pain before ultimately informing the Oxnard Police Department about the assault, after discussing it with friends.
Deputy District Attorney Julia McAndrew, who led the prosecution, emphasized the jury’s decision as a critical affirmation for survivors of sexual violence. "This verdict affirms that survivors have the right to be heard, believed, and protected, and that those who commit these crimes will be held accountable," McAndrew stated. "It is my hope that this outcome brings the victim of this case a meaningful measure of justice."
Baum is currently being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court again on May 29, where he faces a maximum sentence of eight years in state prison.
