Naomi Watts Takes on a Heartfelt Role in the Romantic Drama ‘Margot & Rudi’
WestEnd Films has secured world sales rights for Margot & Rudi, a romantic drama directed by Anthony Fabian, known for Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris. The film features Naomi Watts, renowned for her role in Mulholland Drive.
The narrative centers on the true story of legendary ballet dancers Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev, described as an "electrifying" tale of passion and artistry. The official synopsis reveals that the 42-year-old Fonteyn, at the peak of her career, encounters 23-year-old Nureyev, a daring Soviet defector. Their chemistry sparks a remarkable partnership on stage during the vibrant 1960s, yet their connection is tempered by complexities involving Fonteyn’s marriage and Nureyev’s affair with another dancer. Both are driven to risk everything for a pivotal ballet, where the stage serves as their only true sanctuary.
Naomi Watts is cast as Margot Fonteyn, while Alexandr Trush, principal dancer with the Hamburg Ballet, will portray Rudolf Nureyev. The supporting cast includes Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Demián Bichir (A Better Life), and Harriet Walter (Succession).
The screenplay is penned by Olivia Hetreed, celebrated for Girl with a Pearl Earring. The creative team also comprises hair and makeup designer Karen Hartley Thomas (Golda), choreographer Arthur Pita (Ex Machina), and BAFTA-winning costume designer Fotini Dimou (The Children Act).
Filming is scheduled to commence in October, with production led by Mike Goodridge for Good Chaos, Anthony Fabian for Elysian Films, Olivia Hetreed for Sympathetic Ink, and Chris Coen. Executive producers include Thom Mount, Jeffrey Berg, and Andy Paterson.
