Martin Short’s Documentary “Marty, Life Is Short” Arrives on Netflix This May
Netflix announced on Tuesday morning that Marty, Life Is Short, a definitive documentary on comedian Martin Short, will be available for global streaming on May 12.
The film is directed by Lawrence Kasdan, renowned for classic films such as The Big Chill, Body Heat, and The Bodyguard. Producers include Sara Bernstein, Meredith Kaulfers, Christopher St. John, Justin Wilkes, Kasdan, and Blair Foster, while Brian Grazer and Ron Howard serve as executive producers through Imagine Documentaries.
Short, widely regarded as one of the most successful comedians across film, television, and theater, gained recognition for his Emmy-winning work on Canada’s SCTV. His performance quickly caught the attention of SNL producers, leading to a season-long stint where he charmed audiences with memorable characters such as Ed Grimley, lawyer Nathan Thurm, and “legendary songwriter” Irving Cohen.
Following his success in sketch comedy, Short transitioned to feature films with a prominent role in Three Amigos, alongside Steve Martin and Chevy Chase. His filmography includes notable titles like Innerspace, Three Fugitives, Clifford, Pure Luck, Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks, and the Father of the Bride series.

Short’s television credits are extensive, featuring shows such as The Martin Short Show, Primetime Glick, Damages, and The Morning Show. An accomplished stage actor, he has won a Tony Award, a Theatre World Award, and an Outer Critics Circle Award for his performance in the revival of Little Me. He is also known for his work in Neil Simon’s The Goodbye Girl and Fame Becomes Me, with his most recent Broadway appearance in It’s Only a Play by Terrence McNally.
A two-time Emmy winner, Short is also celebrated for specials like Netflix’s An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life, which he hosted with longtime friend Steve Martin, earning four Emmy nominations in 2018. Together, they executive produce and star in Only Murders in the Building, Hulu’s most-watched comedy, which has garnered seven Emmys from 56 nominations and is set to launch its sixth season soon. Short has received multiple Actors Awards for his role there and is currently nominated for two more.
In 2025, Short will host the new season of ABC’s Match Game, available for streaming on Hulu. He is represented by WME and Brillstein Entertainment Partners, while Kasdan is represented by CAA and Greenberg Glusker.
