Covering an iconic song requires a careful approach, and Avril Lavigne is rising to that challenge.
On April 15, pop punk icon Avril Lavigne unveiled her cover of Alanis Morissette’s seminal 1996 hit “Ironic.” This rendition is featured in the soundtrack for the upcoming Canadian romantic comedy Mile End Kicks, which is set to hit theaters in Canada on Friday.
Staying true to the essence of the original, Lavigne begins her cover with soft vocals accompanied by an acoustic guitar riff, mirroring Morissette’s classic style. As the song progresses, an electric guitar-driven band joins in for a powerful chorus. This isn’t the first time Lavigne has performed “Ironic”; she previously shared the stage with Morissette in 2005 for a duet at Los Angeles’ House of Blues.
“Ironic” is the third single from Morissette’s acclaimed album Jagged Little Pill, which remains her highest-charting hit on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 4 and spending 32 weeks on the chart. Since its release in 1995, Jagged Little Pill spent 12 weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 and garnered the title of Billboard Year-End No. 1 for 1996. The album later inspired a Broadway musical, earning 15 Tony nominations in 2018.
Lavigne emerged onto the music scene three years after Jagged Little Pill, debuting with her album Let Go. Over her career, she has accumulated 20 Hot 100 hits, including her 2007 chart-topping single “Girlfriend.” Her most recent studio album, Love Sux, released in 2022, peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard 200. The cover of “Ironic” marks Lavigne’s first release since her collaboration with Yellowcard on their single “You Broke Me Too” in October 2025.
