Goldie Hawn Shares How ‘Freedom’ Helps Her 42-Year Relationship with Kurt Russell Without Marriage
Goldie Hawn Reflects on Relationship with Kurt Russell
In a recent interview on Dan Buettner’s podcast, Goldie Hawn shared insights about her enduring relationship with Kurt Russell, emphasizing that “freedom” has been fundamental to their success over the past 42 years. This episode is set to be released on January 22.
In an exclusive preview clip from The Dan Buettner Podcast, produced by Andrew Zimmern’s Intuitive Content, Hawn, now 80, articulated her approach to their relationship, which began in 1983. “Freedom” she stated, is what allows their partnership to thrive.
Drawing on her personal philosophy, Hawn remarked, “I have a relationship with birds. I’m a bird. And you leave the cage door open, I may never fly out. But if you close that door, for my freedom and my independence, I would probably take all my feathers off.”
This notion of “freedom of self,” as Hawn described it, plays a crucial role in her relationship with Russell, 74. She elaborated, stating, “It’s a freedom of basically not melding into somebody else when you’re copacetic on certain areas and you have freedom.”

Hawn and Russell, who are parents to actors Kate and Oliver Hudson, as well as Wyatt Russell, have often addressed their choice to remain unmarried. Russell noted in a 2023 interview, “We constantly got asked, ‘When are you going to get married? Why aren’t you married?’ And we were like, ‘Why does anybody care about that?’” He added that their children did not mind their parents’ status, stating, “They didn’t. We didn’t.”

During her conversation with Buettner, Hawn reiterated that marriage would not alter the strength of their bond. “Even if we did get married, it wouldn’t make any difference because it’s 42 years now,” she said. When asked why she continues to choose Russell, she replied, “Because I have respect for him; I think he’s an amazing person.”
Hawn also expressed a deep physical attraction to Russell, calling him “an amazing person” and “my sexual object.” She remarked on his intelligence and enduring looks, stating, “I find him incredibly handsome to this day. Kids love him. We’re an unbelievably happy family—most of the time.”
The full episode featuring Hawn’s insights will be available on January 22 at 10 a.m. PT via YouTube and other podcast platforms.
