LA County Advises Caution for Water Contact Following Recent Rain
Los Angeles County Advises Caution for Beachgoers Due to Elevated Bacteria Levels
Beachgoers in Los Angeles County are advised to avoid all water contact today, particularly in areas near discharging storm drains, creeks, and rivers. This warning follows light rainfall over the weekend, which may have raised bacteria levels in local waters.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has issued an Ocean Water Quality Rain Advisory that will remain in effect until at least 5 a.m. Wednesday. This advisory also encompasses any runoff that could affect beach areas.
“Ocean and bay recreational waters, especially near discharging storm drains, creeks, and rivers can be contaminated with bacteria, chemicals, debris, trash, and other public health hazards from city streets and mountain areas after a rainfall,” the department stated. “Individuals who enter the water in these areas could become ill. Rain advisories remain in effect for 72 hours after the rainfall ends.”
For ongoing updates on beach conditions, county officials provide a 24-hour recorded information line at 800-525-5662.
