Kate Mulgrew from Star Trek Stars in RTÉ’s New Series ‘The Yank’ Focusing on a NYPD Detective in Ireland
Kate Mulgrew Stars in New Irish TV Series ‘The Yank’
Actress Kate Mulgrew, renowned for her roles in Star Trek and Orange is the New Black, is set to headline a new Irish television series titled The Yank. Produced by Two Cities Television, known for its work on Blue Lights, the series features Mulgrew alongside Colm Meaney, recognized for his performance in Gangs of London.
Set against the stunning backdrop of Ireland’s west coast, The Yank revolves around NYPD detective Nora Savage. Following a traumatic incident, Nora seeks refuge in her family home, hoping for a slower pace of life. However, her plans are derailed when she becomes embroiled in a murder investigation linked to a female climate activist. As the plot unfolds, Nora and her team must navigate a thrilling narrative that leads to a high-stakes confrontation with the killer.
The series marks the television debut of writer Eithne Verling, who crafted the script specifically for Mulgrew after an inspiring encounter in Galway during the actress’s holiday. Joining Mulgrew and Meaney in the cast are John Connors, India Mullen, Cillian O’Sullivan, and Jack Rowan.
"Americans in Ireland have provided a rich well of story ideas in the past," noted industry observers, referencing previous works like Sky’s Small Town, Big Story, which chronicled the journey of a Hollywood producer in Ireland.
Mulgrew shared her thoughts on the project, stating: "The Yank was borne out of my love for Ireland, and the luck and perspicacity I have enjoyed when it came to knowing who will matter to me both emotionally and creatively. That person is Eithne Verling, and the character we contrived is Nora Savage – a woman very much like myself, had I been slashed with grief, blessed with raw courage and born a natural hunter of that which destroys. The Yank is the intriguing and unexpected story of a woman who has nothing to lose and her obsessive attraction to what lies beneath."
The production is a collaboration between STV Studios-backed Two Cities, Keeper Pictures, and AS I AM Productions. It has been commissioned by RTÉ Head of Drama David Crean, with executive producers including Crean and Dermot Horan. The directors are Joe Lawler and Christine Molloy, while James Mather serves as the Director of Photography. The Yank is produced for RTÉ in partnership with Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland, Coimisiún na Meán, and uFund, with ITV Studios handling distribution outside the Republic of Ireland.
