Alan Menken Shares Insights on His Beloved Disney Animated Songs, Including ‘A Whole New World’ and ‘Colors of the Wind’
Alan Menken Reflects on a Legendary Career in New Video
Alan Menken, the iconic Disney composer, is reflecting on his remarkable five-decade career in a recent video, revisiting some of the most beloved songs from the Disney animated canon. The video is featured by PEOPLE and includes insights into his songwriting process and anecdotes from his collaborations.
Menken attributes much of his success to playwright Howard Ashman, noting that Ashman played a crucial role in shaping Disney’s "I want" songs, including the signature track "Part of Your World" from The Little Mermaid. "It’s that moment when your protagonist says, ‘This is what I want in my life,’" Menken explains.
The composer delves into the creation of classics such as "A Whole New World" and recalls the story behind the cut song "Proud of Your Boy," which later found new life in the Broadway adaptation of Aladdin. In the video, Menken emphasizes the importance of storytelling in songwriting, stating, “Writing songs means making choices, that’s just part of the process."
Filmed in his Upstate New York home, the video captures Menken at the piano, where he shares the emotional weight of his work. "Music has that ability just with a few notes to take you somewhere," he says, expressing his continued love for the creative process.
Menken’s career began in the musical theater scene, where he worked in various roles before achieving fame. His breakthrough came with the Off-Broadway musical Little Shop of Horrors, co-written with Ashman. The musical gained critical acclaim and set the stage for their partnership with Disney.
Although Menken enjoyed immense success, he also faced significant personal challenges, particularly following Ashman’s death in 1991 due to AIDS. This profound loss heavily influenced his subsequent work, including Aladdin, which he completed with lyricist Tim Rice. Together, they produced the timeless duet "A Whole New World."
The video also sheds light on other key songs from the Disney Renaissance, including "Colors of the Wind" from Pocahontas and "Out There" from The Hunchback of Notre Dame, both of which highlight Menken’s partnership with lyricist Stephen Schwartz.
Reflecting on the songs that did not make the final cuts, Menken discusses the necessity of sometimes letting go of beloved ideas for the sake of progress in a project’s narrative. "You have to listen to what the project needs," he notes.
Through all the ups and downs, Menken’s enduring passion for songwriting shines through. "I love the process of writing songs. I love the process of collaborating," he says. Ultimately, the joy for Menken lies in the music itself—an element that has driven his impressive career.
Menken’s ability to blend emotion and artistry in his compositions has left an indelible mark on Disney’s legacy and the broader musical landscape.
