Ariela Barer Praises Odessa A’zion for Her Integrity Amid ‘Deep Cuts’ Casting Discussion
Ariela Barer has publicly expressed her support for Odessa A’zion following the latter’s casting in Sean Durkin’s film Deep Cuts.
The decision to recast A’zion came amid controversy regarding the portrayal of a character from Holly Brickley’s debut novel. The role of Zoe Gutierrez is specifically described as half Mexican and half Jewish, prompting discussions about authenticity in casting.
“That’s what I’m talkin’ about, baby,” Barer posted on Instagram, sharing a screenshot of the news. “Always stand up for what I KNOW is right. I stand by my decision and am so so so so so happy this is the outcome. C’mon baby!! She’s gonna eat it up.”

In another Instagram post, Barer recognized A’zion for stepping down from the role amid the backlash. She stated, “And a genuine major shoutout to [Odessa A’zion] for always leading with integrity and being an absolute real one for as long as I’ve known her.”
Barer expressed her enthusiasm for participating in the project, stating she was “excited to be a part of this special project with such special people.”

The announcement of A’zion’s initial casting as Zoe sparked criticism, leading to claims of whitewashing in the role. Over 100 Latino artists in Hollywood signed an open letter calling for greater authenticity in casting decisions.
In response to the backlash, A’zion withdrew from the project, admitting she was unaware of the character’s background. “Guys!! I am with ALL of you and I am NOT doing this movie,” she stated on Instagram in late January.
In a subsequent post, A’zion elaborated on her initial excitement about the role, clarifying that she had tested for another character but was ultimately offered Zoe. “I’m so pissed y’all, I hadn’t read the book and should have paid more attention to all aspects of Zoe before accepting… and now that I know what I know???”
She emphasized her commitment to authenticity, stating, “I would never take a role from someone else that’s meant to do it. That SHOULD do it! That’s not me. There are a plentitude of people more than capable of playing this role and I am not one of them. I can’t wait to see who it ends up being.”
Deep Cuts tells a love story involving two music-obsessed young adults, featuring Cailee Spaeny and Drew Starkey in lead roles. The film is produced by Eli Bush, Ronald Bronstein, and Josh Safdie, along with Durkin, Anthony Katagas, Jordan Tappis, and A24, with Brickley serving as an executive producer.
