Jason Momoa Shares His Favorite Hawaiian Food Chain in His New Film
Jason Momoa Celebrates Hawaiian Roots in New Film, The Wrecking Crew
In a recent interview promoting his latest film, The Wrecking Crew, Jason Momoa shared personal insights about the production set in Hawaii and his connection to local culture. The film, co-starring Dave Bautista, showcases not only action but also elements of home for the Hawaiian-born actor.
Momoa revealed that one of his favorite Hawaiian dining spots, Zippy’s, features prominently in the film. “So I got to put in my favorite local favorite, and it’s in the movie,” he stated, expressing pride in how it reflects his childhood. “That’s when I knew I made it. We’re in the menu.” Zippy’s, known for its comfort food and strong community ties, holds a special place in Momoa’s heart. He fondly recalled visiting the restaurant with his father upon returning to Hawaii as a child: “So it’s something that’s very dear to me, and we put it in the movie.”
While the inclusion of Zippy’s was a meaningful gesture, it also provided a humorous moment for Bautista, who sat alongside Momoa during the interview. The former wrestler noted with a chuckle, “He tore it up…and I was just so jealous watching him eat, because nothing on the menu I can eat.” Bautista has recently committed to a healthy lifestyle, further complicating his ability to indulge like Momoa.
The conversation turned lighthearted as both stars reflected on their dietary choices. Bautista mentioned his current gluten-free and dairy-free regimen, to which Momoa jokingly replied, “Boring!” Bautista, now plant-based, expressed a yearning for a classic pizza, particularly the New York-style variety. “If I could just have a real pizza…with real crust that just rises and baked just right,” he reminisced.
In contrast, Momoa noted that his cheat meal consists of traditional Hawaiian dishes. “My cheat meal is just Hawaiian food, just all the stuff I love,” he said, listing favorites such as Kahlua pig and lau lau, poi, and mac salad.
In a fitting tribute to their collaboration, a custom Zippy’s “Wrecking Crew Pack” was even included in the film’s universe. Momoa shared his excitement: “Dude, it’s amazing. It’s just some of the favorite local food.” The actor emphasized that the inclusion was more about pride in his culture than advertising.
The Wrecking Crew is now available for streaming on Prime Video, inviting audiences to experience both the action and a slice of Hawaiian culture.
