Judd Apatow Talks About His Exciting Projects with Glen Powell, the Mel Brooks Documentary, and Oscar Hopes for the Maria Bamford Film at Sundance Studio
Maria Bamford Documentary Sparks Excitement Among Comedians
Maria Bamford, celebrated for her unique comedic style, is the subject of an upcoming documentary titled Paralyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story. Director and producer Judd Apatow praised Bamford’s originality, noting her ability to create humor on her own terms. "Not to embarrass Maria, but I feel like she really is a true original in the subjects she chooses," Apatow stated. He compared her influence to that of legendary filmmakers and musicians, dubbing her "the John Cassavetes of standup" and "the Radiohead" of comedy.
Bamford, 55, expressed mixed feelings about the documentary being created at this stage in her career. "It’s late in the game, but it’s very exciting," she remarked. She humorously acknowledged the trepidation other artists feel when facing their biographical narratives: “Other people said this when they’ve had a documentary [made about them] that you’re worried you’re going to die. There’s going to be this plot point."
Apatow chimed in, playfully suggesting a dramatic turn, "Then we’d win an Oscar."
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos also features in the documentary, speaking to his admiration for Bamford’s comedic talent. "Ted has been a big part of Maria’s career," remarked Berkeley, noting that the documentary marks significant milestones for Netflix, including Comedians of Comedy, which starred Bamford, and the scripted series Lady Dynamite.
Paralyzed by Hope is an acquisition title currently overseen by WME. Meanwhile, Apatow’s new documentary, Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man, has already premiered on HBO, with its second part set to air soon.
Reflecting on the impact of comedy, Apatow highlighted Mel Brooks’ contribution to the industry. "He’s the reason why so many of us went into comedy," Apatow said, lauding Brooks for his multifaceted talent and moral compass. "He was always attacking Nazis and fascism and the government mistreating its people and racism," he added, emphasizing Brooks’ capability to infuse humor into poignant social critiques.
Apatow also teased excitement over a new comedy film, revealing details about its focus on a country music star with a tumultuous life. "It’s comedic," he stated, revealing the excitement surrounding the cast, which will soon include notable actors like Cristin Milioti and Madelyn Cline.
As the comedy landscape evolves, Apatow remains dedicated to this new theatrical endeavor, confirming ongoing collaboration with writer Glen. "We’ve been writing the script together for about a year and a half," he said, expressing enthusiasm about their partnership and the comedic potential of the project.
