The Journey of Artists in ‘The White Lotus’ Season 4: Insights from EP David Bernad on Cannes Film Festival Experience
The White Lotus Season 4 is set to explore the intricacies of artistic life, offering a deeply meta narrative, according to the executive producer. Shooting is currently underway in Cannes, France, featuring a roster of notable actors, including Vincent Cassel, Steve Coogan, Chris Messina, and Nadia Tereszkiewicz.
Bernad, who collaborates closely with writer, creator, and showrunner Mike White, highlighted the season’s exploration of the loneliness and pain often associated with the life of an artist. “Early on, Mike talked about wanting to do Season 4 as the life of an artist,” he stated.
The narrative thread weaves through themes of fame and personal connections, as Bernad noted, “As we located the show at the Cannes Film Festival, this idea of fame popped up—who has the world’s attention, who can grab it, and what drives our priorities in relationships?”

Speaking at Canneseries over the weekend, Bernad described Season 4 as “the most personal and the funniest” installment yet. “It really examines the things we value as people and how fame can be corrosive,” he added. The characters find themselves existentially reflecting on their choices and sacrifices, with some just beginning to navigate the world of fame. “Mike does a brilliant job of capturing how relationships can be corroded.”
The show’s creators have aimed to set the series in the French Riviera since Season 2. Bernad recalled his own experience at the Cannes Film Festival, recalling the glamor and passion for filmmaking that captivated him. “The energy around it was so intoxicating,” he said, noting that this season will encapsulate the narratives of people navigating the festival and its inherent challenges.
Bernad shared that the season’s inspiration stemmed from a humorous interaction with a waiter and the maître d’ at a Cannes restaurant, which prompted them to abandon alternative location plans for the Côte d’Azur. “It was a very funny moment that totally unlocked what the show is about,” he said.
The process of scouting filming locations proved challenging, especially during the peak tourist season. Ultimately, they chose the iconic Martinez and the Airelles Château de la Messardière in Saint-Tropez, with the former dubbed the “White Lotus Cannes” and the latter the “White Lotus du Cap.” Bernad praised the Martinez, calling it “a beautiful place that perfectly captured what we were going for,” indicating that White would utilize chosen sites to influence the scripts.
Meanwhile, the role is undergoing revamping and recasting. Bernad appeared ready to discuss the associated “creative challenges” but was notably guided away from the subject by the moderator.
