Jason Clarke Joins Legendary’s Live-Action Gundam Movie, Targeting a Netflix Release
Reps for Netflix and Legendary have opted not to comment on the latest developments regarding the live-action Gundam film, leaving details about the plot and the role of actor Clarke under wraps.
Co-developed by Legendary and Bandai Namco Filmworks, this forthcoming Gundam movie marks the franchise’s first venture into live-action storytelling. Jim Mickle, known for his work as showrunner on Sweet Tooth, will direct the film from his own screenplay. He will also produce alongside Linda Moran through their production company, Nightshade. Actor Noah Centineo is set to co-produce with partner Enzo Marc.
Launched in 1979 with the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam, the franchise has become a cornerstone of the sci-fi genre, particularly in the “mecha” subgenre that features giant fighting robots. Created by Yoshiyuki Tomino, Gundam continues to generate over $600 million annually. Legendary announced the film’s development in spring 2021, originally bringing Jordan Vogt-Roberts, director of Kong: Skull Island, on board, though he has since exited the project.
Clarke, who recently collaborated with director Kathryn Bigelow on the Netflix political thriller A House of Dynamite, portrayed convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh in the Hulu limited series Murdaugh: Death in the Family. He has also recently completed work on the Warner Bros. action-thriller F.A.S.T., which was written by Taylor Sheridan. Other recent roles include leading Apple’s The Last Frontier and portraying 1970s Lakers coach Jerry West in HBO’s Winning Time: Rise of the Lakers Dynasty. He is represented by Robert Stein Management, CAA, and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman.
