Whoopi Goldberg Teams Up to Produce Documentary on Olympic Refugee Athletes
Whoopi Goldberg Executive Produces Documentary on Refugee Athletes for Paris 2024 Olympics
Whoopi Goldberg is set to executive produce More Than A Medal, a feature documentary directed by Sean Claffey that focuses on refugee athletes competing in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The project, currently in production, is being handled by Limonero Films, which is presenting its initial footage to buyers at the European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin.
The film, tentatively titled More Than A Medal, follows sports journalist Poppy Farsijani as she chronicles the inspiring journeys of refugee athletes. It captures their significant achievements in sports alongside their personal struggles for freedom.
The International Olympic Committee has included an official refugee team in the Olympics since 2016, allowing them to participate in the opening ceremonies alongside traditional competing nations. Filming for More Than A Medal took place not only in Paris but also at various international locations, including New York, Los Angeles, Washington, London, Bulgaria, and Germany.
Claffey, known for Americonned, unpacks the stories of several athletes who are part of the refugee team.
“We shine the light into the darkness and expose injustice perpetrated on these athletes,” Farsijani, who is also a producer on the project, remarked. “We pull back the curtain, not only highlighting their remarkable journeys but also addressing universal themes of resilience, freedom, and the pursuit of justice.”
Limonero Films has provided footage for prospective buyers at the EFM. Founder Pamela Martínez Martínez expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “The team has been working hard, traveling the world with these athletes to tell their stories of hardship and resilience. We look forward to starting discussions with festival programmers and buyers about it at EFM.”
