Imax Sees Promise in ‘Project Hail Mary’ as It Navigates Tough Year-Over-Year Comparisons with ‘Ne Zha 2’
IMAX Exceeds Q1 Expectations Amid Competitive Landscape
IMAX has reported its first-quarter results for 2023, surpassing Wall Street analysts’ estimates, aided by the success of Project Hail Mary. The company noted that this performance was particularly noteworthy given challenging comparisons to last year’s blockbuster, Ne Zha 2.
Total revenue for the quarter reached $81.4 million, a decline of 6% from the same period last year. However, earnings per share rose to 17 cents, up from 13 cents a year prior. Both revenue and earnings figures exceeded analysts’ consensus expectations.
Looking ahead, IMAX reaffirmed its guidance, anticipating a record $1.4 billion in global box office revenue from its venues by 2026.
Notably, Project Hail Mary, a sci-fi film starring Ryan Gosling, has significantly outperformed internal projections, generating over $600 million globally and establishing itself as the studio’s top-grossing title to date.
Ne Zha 2 had been a standout film during last year’s first quarter, particularly due to its release during the highly lucrative Chinese New Year. The animated feature amassed over $2.2 billion at the box office, marking it as the highest-grossing animated film of all time and the fourth highest across all genres.
The current quarter’s performance was supported by Project Hail Mary and Avatar: Fire and Ash, contributing to a total of $260 million in global box office revenue. While results in China fell short of last year’s performance, North America saw growth of 75%, with the rest of the world—excluding China—up by 60%.
IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond is gradually resuming his responsibilities after taking a temporary medical leave earlier this spring. Traditionally present at industry events like CinemaCon, Gelfond has been recuperating.
In the earnings release, Gelfond provided an update on his health, stating, “My recovery from pneumonia is progressing well. I have been discharged from the hospital and will continue to focus on my health in the coming weeks. I want to thank my doctors, my family, the team at IMAX, and everyone for their support.”
