Warner Bros. Discovery Honors Ted Turner Amid Major Corporate Shifts
Warner Bros. Discovery paid tribute to CNN founder Ted Turner at its annual upfront presentation on Wednesday, marking a significant moment that may be the company’s last as an independent entity. The event, held at Madison Square Garden, set a tone of reflection as Turner’s legacy continues to shape the media landscape.
Following a short video tribute, journalist Anderson Cooper lauded Turner as a “bold visionary,” emphasizing the lasting impact of his contributions to the industry. "The legacy that he built continues to inspire this industry every day, and it will for years to come," Cooper remarked, sharing one of Turner’s well-known quotes: “Early to bed, early to rise, work like hell and advertise.”
Amid this homage, Warner Bros. Discovery is navigating a merger with David Ellison’s Paramount, a move that has altered previous plans to separate its cable network division.
The presentation commenced with an emphasis on the company’s cable offerings, featuring appearances by stars from the show The Pitt and filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, adding a glamorous touch to the event. Co-President of U.S. Advertising Sales, Robert Voltaggio, humorously addressed the notable changes taking place within the industry. “We want to address the Ellison… I mean elephant in the room,” he quipped, to which Ryan Gould, also Co-President, acknowledged the broader changes affecting the media sector.
As the agenda progressed, Warner Bros. Discovery highlighted its upcoming sports initiatives, featuring mentions of the NHL on TNT and a new professional dunk league spearheaded by Shaquille O’Neal. The lively presentation included appearances by Leslie Jones, host of HGTV’s Roast My Rental, and Terry Crews, leading Food Network’s 100 Cooks, among other celebrity guests.
CNN’s Anderson Cooper returned to discuss new programming and technological developments, joined by reporters Kaitlan Collins and Abby Phillip. Craig Ferguson promoted his upcoming show American on Purpose, adding a light-hearted comment about Cooper’s hairstyle.
The event showcased an array of new content, including fresh series from CNN, notable films like a new version of Gremlins, and updates on Minecraft Movie 2 featuring Jack Black and Jason Momoa. Director M. Night Shyamalan took the stage to announce his upcoming supernatural romantic thriller Remain, which he described as the highest-testing film of his career.
The presentation garnered applause for the stars of HBO Max’s The Pitt, Noah Wyle and Katherine LaNasa, who confirmed production for Season 3.
Wyle noted the new season’s setting in early November, hinting at complex situations that lie ahead. The unveiling of the spinoff Stuart Fails to Save the Universe from The Big Bang Theory also drew attention, with cast members joking about the show’s title during its promotional segment.
The event briefly touched on The White Lotus, showcasing an image featuring Laura Dern, who has taken over a role from Helena Bonham Carter in the acclaimed series.
As Warner Bros. Discovery embarks on this transformative phase, the significance of Ted Turner’s legacy, along with the creative and corporate updates, marks a pivotal moment for the future of media.
