Carrie Underwood recently commemorated the 20th anniversary of her iconic hit, "Before He Cheats," sharing insights on the song’s evolution and its significance in her career. During an interview, she expressed her initial concerns about the song’s aggressive tone, reflecting on her image as a "sweet farm girl" from her time on American Idol. “I hope that’s who I still am — but it was almost, ‘Maybe we don’t do this song,’” Underwood remarked.
Despite her hesitations, the song proved to be a massive success, becoming a defining element of her career. Underwood noted, "Everybody loved it so much, we went for it and it … worked. But, yeah, 20 years later, we still see people perform it, and it’s a lot of fun."
Originally featured on her debut album, Some Hearts, released in November 2005, "Before He Cheats" was re-released as a single in 2006, propelling her to international stardom. Underwood continues to recognize the song’s staying power, a sentiment echoed in her personal life as well. She recounted a humorous moment when she found her 6-year-old son watching her music video at home, illustrating the song’s generational appeal.
Reflecting on her career, which began with her Idol victory in Season 4 and includes her return as a judge, Underwood marveled at her journey. “It is absolutely impossible to wrap my head around the successes I’ve encountered over the years,” she stated, acknowledging the support from her fans.
Underwood has also revisited her past music during recent performances, much to the delight of her audience. “We’ve kind of started pulling out some of those songs just to play in show form for some recent shows, and I feel like the fans are liking that. And I’m liking that too.”
She added, “I feel like my voice has grown, my musicality, my songwriting, my performance abilities. I just — I feel better.” As American Idol prepares to premiere on January 26 at 8 p.m. ET, Underwood’s enduring success serves as a testament to her growth as an artist and her lasting impact on the music industry.
