Birmingham Takes Big Step Toward League Title with Win Over El Camino Real
Birmingham Patriots Eye First West Valley League Title After Sweep of El Camino Real
Birmingham High School celebrated its latest victory as the Patriots triumphed over El Camino Real with a decisive 9-1 win, completing a two-game sweep in West Valley League play. This victory brings the Patriots one step closer to their first league title under Coach Matt Mowry, who has earned five City Section championships throughout his 20 seasons but has yet to secure a league title.
Nathan Soto was a standout on the mound, striking out five batters without issuing a walk over six innings. Offensively, Birmingham demonstrated depth, with Carlos Acuna, Toni Mendoza, and Jordan Lindsay each contributing two hits.
With a record of 22-4 overall and 11-2 in league play, the Patriots currently hold a one-game lead over El Camino Real, which stands at 18-8 overall and 10-3 in league action. Athletic Director Rick Prizant often jestingly reminds Coach Mowry of his focus on City titles, but this year, the players are determined to change the narrative surrounding league achievements.
"Our guys came in with a good approach and stuck to it and performed in all aspects," Mowry remarked after the game.
The Patriots showcased their offensive prowess during a seven-run third inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Aidan Martinez. Following this, Acuna added an RBI single, Mendoza contributed a two-run single, and JuJu Monroe-Truitt also hit an RBI single, cementing their dominance.
In other league matchups, Chatsworth edged Cleveland 1-0, thanks to a five-hit shutout pitched by Isaiah Sanchez. Granada Hills defeated Taft 5-1, powered by Foss Bohlen’s seven strikeouts over six innings.
The East Valley League saw Monroe clinch the title with a 7-1 victory over Chavez, marking their first league championship since 1995, driven by Felipe Gonzalez’s impressive six innings without allowing a score.
Additional highlights include victories for Bell, Garfield, and Norco, as well as strong performances from Villa Park and Oaks Christian, illustrating a dynamic slate of games throughout the league.
In softball, Granada Hills dominated Taft 16-2, with Dahlia Perez hitting a grand slam during a remarkable 15-run second inning. Norco’s Peyton May also excelled, striking out 13 batters in an 11-0 win over Corona Santiago.
As the season progresses, the spotlight will remain fixated on Birmingham High as they pursue both the league title and the legacy of their storied baseball program.
