Neighborhood Outrage Grows as Fires at Sun Valley Hoarder House Lead to Legal Action
Fire at Sun Valley Hoarder House Raises Community Concerns
LOS ANGELES – Residents of Sun Valley are once again grappling with safety concerns following a fire that broke out on Friday at a property on La Tuna Canyon Road. This incident marks the fifth fire reported at the site, which has been criticized for hoarding and hazardous materials.
The latest blaze prompted the deployment of Hazmat crews to address compromised lithium-ion batteries found among the debris, which includes junk and abandoned vehicles. The extensive accumulation of items has raised alarms among neighbors, who describe the property as a "hoarder’s paradise."
“City of Los Angeles” had previously attempted a cleanup after an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report indicated the presence of toxic chemicals last summer. However, residents claim that debris has quickly re-accumulated, continuing to pose a risk.
The property is owned by a woman known as Mary Ferrera, who stated in court that her son, identified by neighbors as "Dave," is responsible for the condition of the home. Ferrera was sentenced to 180 days in jail for failing to maintain the property but served only one day due to her age.
Community members have expressed grave concerns about safety. One neighbor remarked, “I’ve got animals, the people that live next door to me have two kids. We can’t have this kind of crisis… Help us manage this before all of our houses burn down.”
City Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez emphasized the longstanding public safety hazards posed by the property, stating, “I will continue to use every tool at my disposal to remediate the site and maintain the Los Angeles Fire Department’s access to responding to fires in the area.”
A jury trial regarding the property is set to begin on Wednesday, April 29. This legal proceeding aims to hold the property owner accountable for the ongoing safety risks and the failure to ensure a clean and safe environment despite previous interventions.
