Law & Order: Organized Crime Wraps Up After Five Seasons
Law & Order: Organized Crime Not Returning for Sixth Season
Law & Order: Organized Crime, featuring Christopher Meloni, will not be returning for a sixth season on Peacock or NBC. This decision aligns with the series’ trajectory, as the fifth season premiered on Peacock a year ago and subsequently aired on NBC during the fall.
The show, which follows Meloni’s character, Elliot Stabler, as he returns to the NYPD to tackle organized crime, initially departed from the traditional procedural formula typical of other Law & Order franchises. This shift to a more serialized storytelling format may have contributed to its underwhelming performance compared to other Wolf dramas, leading to its move from NBC to Peacock after the fourth season.
The fifth season struggled with its dual identity between traditional broadcast and streaming platforms. Transitioning a show that had established itself on broadcast television for four seasons into a streaming format overnight posed significant challenges.
Another factor in Peacock’s cancellation decision was the series’ revolving door of showrunners, with five different leaders overseeing the production in as many seasons. The anticipated sixth season would have introduced yet another showrunner.
In addition to Meloni, the cast of Season 5 included Danielle Moné Truitt, Ainsley Seiger, Rick Gonzalez, and Dean Norris. The series was produced by Universal Television in partnership with Wolf Entertainment.
Meloni will continue to pursue other projects, including his lead role in Dan Fogelman’s upcoming NFL drama for Hulu, The Land.
