American Idol Celebrates Its Strongest Debut in Four Years
American Idol has made a successful transition to its new Monday night slot, achieving its largest season premiere audience in four years.
According to Nielsen’s live+same day preliminary ratings, the talent competition drew 5.9 million viewers, along with a 0.54 rating among adults aged 18-49. This marks a notable increase from last year’s premiere, which garnered 4.49 million viewers and a 0.45 rating.
This season’s debut is the show’s strongest since Season 20 in 2022.
American Idol continues to be hosted by Ryan Seacrest, featuring judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood. The show previously aired on Sunday nights, but has shifted to Mondays for the current season.
ABC took the opportunity to highlight its strong ratings performance by noting that this season’s premiere outperformed The Voice for the first time since the series joined the network, emphasizing the comparison to The Voice‘s fall averages.
The network is clearly benefiting from a resurgence in ratings for its flagship entertainment programs, including American Idol and Dancing with the Stars. Last season, Idol nearly doubled the votes received during its finale.
In an innovative approach, Idol is introducing live social media voting this season, marking a first for entertainment shows.
The season premiere featured poignant performances, including Jesse Findling, who sang Benson Boone’s “In The Stars,” despite his stutter, and Khloe Grace, who performed “Forever 13.” This song, written in memory of Aubreigh Wyatt, a 13-year-old who died by suicide in 2023, brought Carrie Underwood to tears.
