Summary
- On December 31, MTV ceased operations for several music-only channels.
- Flagship channels will continue to air regular programming.
- MTV made its U.S. debut on August 1, 1981.
A Conclusion to an Era
MTV’s closure of music-only channels on December 31, 2025, marks a significant milestone in the network’s history, ending decades of 24-hour music broadcasting. The decision, which was first announced in October, was confirmed by multiple sources, including Rolling Stone.
MTV debuted in the United States on August 1, 1981, with "Video Killed the Radio Star" by the Buggles as its inaugural video. Ironically, this same clip served as the last video aired by MTV Music on December 31.
"It’s been a bit sad for a while," said Daisy Fuentes, a former MTV DJ, in an October 2025 interview. "MTV had its time, and history that time will never repeat, and it’s time to change… We all change. We have to evolve."
Is MTV Shutting Down?
Despite the closure of its music-centric channels, MTV is not shutting down entirely. The network will maintain regular programming on its flagship channels, including popular shows like The Challenge and RuPaul’s Drag Race. According to Variety, MTV ranked as the 49th most popular cable network in 2025, ahead of Comedy Central.
Channels Ending Operations
The channels that went off the air include MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live. This decision affected several countries, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Australia, and Brazil, as reported by the BBC. Each channel featured a distinct final video; for example, MTV 90s aired "Goodbye" by the Spice Girls.
Viewers attempting to access these channels will now see a looping montage of the channels’ logos, along with a message directing them to access content on the main MTV channel.
Reasons Behind the Shutdown
Neither MTV nor its parent company, Paramount, have publicly elaborated on the reasons for shutting down dedicated music programming channels. Earlier this year, MTV halted several awards shows, such as the MTV Europe Music Awards, as part of broader cost-cutting initiatives related to Paramount’s merger with Skydance, which concluded in August 2025.
In May 2023, the network’s news division, MTV News, was also shut down after 36 years due to unspecified economic pressures, according to comments made by Chris McCarthy, president of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Media Networks.
