What We’ve Learned About the Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping Movie So Far
Suzanne Collins has delighted fans with a return to the world of the The Hunger Games series, introducing a prequel focused on the character Haymitch Abernathy. Collins originally published the first three books between 2008 and 2010.
In the film adaptations, Haymitch, played by Woody Harrelson, served as the mentor to Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) during their participation in the 74th and 75th Hunger Games.
As anticipation builds for the upcoming film adaptation of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, here are key details:
Release Date
The film is scheduled to hit theaters on November 20, 2026.
Trailer Availability
A teaser trailer released on November 20 features new actors portraying younger versions of familiar characters. This clip includes performances by Close as Drusilla, Zada as Haymitch, Peak as Lenore Dove, Grace as Maysilee Donner, Wang as Wyatt Callow, Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Fanning as Effie Trinket, and Fiennes as President Snow.
The trailer concludes with what appears to be Harrelson’s voice, echoing the pattern established by Donald Sutherland in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
Haymitch Abernathy’s Role
Joseph Zada has been cast as Haymitch. Zada gained attention in the television adaptation of We Were Liars, where he plays Johnny Sinclair.
Cast Details

Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler) will also be featured as a member of the Covey.
Ralph Fiennes will portray President Snow, a role previously held by Donald Sutherland in the original films. Ben Wang joins the cast as Wyatt Callow, another male tribute in the second Quarter Quell, while Elle Fanning has been confirmed as a younger version of Effie Trinket.
Recent reports indicate that Molly McCann will play Louella, and Iona Bell will depict her Capitol-assigned lookalike Lou Lou.
Plot Overview
The prequel centers on Haymitch’s participation in the Hunger Games. As a victor of the 50th games, the experience was harrowing, notwithstanding his survival.
Every 25 years, a Quarter Quell is introduced, adding a new twist to the games. For Haymitch’s games, each district was required to send double the tributes, resulting in a total of 48 competitors instead of the usual 24.
In this dystopian setting, each of the 12 districts must send two tributes to compete in the brutal arena, adhering to the barbaric tradition of the Hunger Games.
In District 12, where Katniss, Peeta, Haymitch, and Lucy Gray Baird originated, candidates could opt for additional slips of paper in exchange for food or supplies.
Returning Stars
Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are set to reprise their iconic roles as Katniss and Peeta in this prequel.
Creative Team
Francis Lawrence, who helmed The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Catching Fire, and both Mockingjay films, will direct once again. The screenplay is written by Billy Ray, who adapted the original film.
