Cailee Spaeny and Drew Starkey Cast in A24’s Adaptation of Deep Cuts
Set in the 2000s, Deep Cuts tells the story of two music-obsessed twentysomethings as they navigate the complexities of ambition, belonging, and adulthood during a transformative decade.
The film adaptation was originally slated to feature Saoirse Ronan and Austin Butler. However, due to scheduling conflicts, both actors exited the project. The studio has since pivoted to cast two of the industry’s most sought-after young talents, with production scheduled to commence in February 2026.

Blake Mills, a Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, and producer who recently secured his third nomination for Producer of the Year, will compose original music for the film.
Eli Bush, Ronald Bronstein, and Josh Safdie will produce the project under their central banner. Director Sean Durkin will also produce alongside Anthony Katagas, Jordan Tappis, and A24. Executive production will be led by Matt Brickley.
Deep Cuts is set to be released on February 25, 2025. It has already been selected as an Indie Next Pick, an Apple Debut Pick, a Today Spring Pick, and a Bookseller’s Book of the Month. Additionally, it has received accolades as a Best New Book from People and Barnes & Noble, and was recognized as an Amazon Best Book of the Year Discovery Read.
Rafting the wave of acclaim, actress Paulina Spaeny is quickly becoming a favorite of A24, with this role marking her fourth leading performance for the company. Her previous works include notable films like Civil War and Priscilla, the latter earning her a Golden Globe nomination and the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival. Spaeny will also reunite with A24 this spring in the new season of the Emmy-winning series Beef on Netflix, sharing the screen with Charles Melton, Oscar Isaac, and Carey Mulligan.
In addition to her A24 projects, Spaeny recently appeared in the 20th Century Studios film Alien: Romulus, which reboots the iconic franchise, and she stars in Wake Up Dead Man, the latest installment of the Knives Out series, currently in theaters and set to be available on Netflix on December 12.
While not as prolific in A24 films as Spaeny, actor Jacob Starkey has made a mark with his critically lauded role in the A24 film Queer, which also featured Craig. His upcoming projects include the Apple series Lucky alongside Anya Taylor-Joy, and the film King Snake directed by Jeff Nichols, where he stars opposite Margaret Qualley and Michael Shannon.
Spaeny is represented by WME, Range, and Hansen Jacobson, while Starkey is signed with Gersh and Brillstein. Durkin is represented by UTA and Entertainment 360, and Brickley is with CAA.
