What is the plot of Christopher Nolan’s next film?
In a reveal just before Christmas, it was announced that Nolan will adapt Homer’s epic poem, composed around the 8th century BCE. Universal Studios made this announcement public.
“Christopher Nolan’s next film The Odyssey is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology,” the studio stated in a message shared on December 23, 2024, via X. “The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.”
This classic narrative follows Odysseus, King of Ithaca, on his perilous journey home after the Trojan War. The ancient Greek epic epitomizes the hero’s journey as Odysseus encounters challenges including the Cyclops Polyphemus, Sirens, the nymph Calypso, and the witch goddess Circe, all while striving to return to his island home and wife, Penelope, who weaves a wedding shroud each night in anticipation of her husband’s potential absence.

The cast includes industry veterans such as Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon, Benny Safdie, Dev Patel, Elliot Page, and Emily Irwin, many of whom have previously collaborated with Nolan.
