Warner Bros. Discovery Streaming Chief Shares Excitement for Upcoming Harry Potter TV Series
HBO Max’s upcoming Harry Potter television series is poised to be “the biggest streaming event in the history of HBO Max and arguably in streaming, period,” according to J.B. Perrette, Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming chief, who made the announcement today in London.
Perrette, CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games at WBD, expressed enthusiasm about the series, which features Dominic McLaughlin in the role of the young wizard Harry Potter. The announcement coincided with the launch date reveal for HBO Max in the UK and Ireland.
“[Harry Potter] producer David Heyman will tell you the scope of the production, the detail, the meticulousness of what they are going through and what they are building,” Perrette stated. “It takes theatrical to a whole different level.”
He added, “In the series, you can go deeper and tell more of the pieces that you didn’t capture in a two-hour movie. Casey [Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content] doesn’t like me saying this, but I really think this is the streaming event of the decade.”
Since the announcement of the series in April 2023, excitement has been palpable as it aims to retell J.K. Rowling’s original Harry Potter novels through a multi-season television format.
HBO Max is scheduled to launch in the UK and Ireland on March 26, marking the completion of the service’s rollout across Europe. The Harry Potter series, produced by Warner Bros. Television, HBO Entertainment, Brontë Film & TV, and Heyday Films, is set to debut in 2027, positioning itself among the most significant series launches worldwide.
“The team have been waiting for so long to deliver this in a market as big and important as the UK,” Perrette remarked, reinforcing his claim that it will be “the biggest streaming event in the history of HBO Max and arguably in streaming, period. It’s number one, two, and three in many ways.”
Dominic McLaughlin will be joined by Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. Additional key roles will be played by actors including John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, and Nick Frost.
The original film series catapulted Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson to stardom, generating billions of dollars at the box office for Warner Bros.
