HBO Max Announces Launch Date for UK and Ireland
HBO Max Set to Launch in the UK and Ireland on March 26
HBO Max is set to officially launch in the UK and Ireland on March 26, marking a significant development for the streaming platform. The service will be available directly to consumers and through partnerships with Amazon and Sky, a strategy similar to its debut in countries such as Australia.
Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) has been teasing a late March launch since last year. Subscription options include the Basic with Ads tier priced at £4.99 ($6.79) monthly, and the Standard with Ads at £5.99. The ad-free Standard tier is offered at £9.99, while the Premium tier costs £14.99.
TNT Sports subscribers can access HBO Max through their existing accounts, which will remain priced at £30.99. Meanwhile, Discovery+ will continue as the home of HBO programming until the launch date, with plans to exist independently later this year.
HBO Max, owned by WBD, will be accessible across various devices, including TVs, streaming boxes, and gaming consoles. Currently, the service operates in 110 territories worldwide and boasts a diverse content library featuring HBO, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Max originals. The launch slate will include the Emmy-winning series The Pitt and new seasons of Euphoria and House of the Dragon, alongside the Green Lantern series Lanterns and an upcoming Harry Potter show.
Additionally, the movie lineup will feature titles such as Superman, One Battle After Another, Sinners, A Minecraft Movie, and Dune: Part One. The launch has significant implications in the UK due to the existing content agreement between Warner Bros. and Sky, which has exclusively aired new HBO shows.
JB Perrette, CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games at WBD, expressed excitement about the launch, stating, "After decades of delighting audiences in the UK and Ireland with our remarkable stories and brands, it’s a huge thrill to finally bring it all together on HBO Max."
WBD has completed the HBO Max rollout in Europe, having initially launched the service in the U.S. in 2020 and expanded it to other regions. With plans to surpass 130 million subscribers worldwide, some analysts have noted the potential drawbacks of a slower rollout compared to competitors.
Paolo Pescatore, an analyst at PP Foresight, remarked on the significance of HBO’s independent availability in this key European market, noting, "This represents a key first step." He also highlighted that Sky could face challenges due to HBO Max’s launch, anticipating that the company will need to develop new partnerships and offerings to counteract potential subscriber loss.
The ongoing competitive landscape raises questions about HBO Max’s future, particularly in light of a possible major acquisition by Netflix. While Perrette did not address the acquisition directly, he suggested that HBO Max could align with Netflix’s strategic objectives due to its distinctive content focus.
