Ventura County Sheriff Alerts Community About Rise in Armed Catalytic Converter Thefts
Catalytic Converter Thefts Surge in Ventura County
VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. – The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office has issued a public safety alert following a notable rise in catalytic converter thefts throughout the region. Recent reports indicate a sharp increase, with over 50 incidents documented in various cities and unincorporated areas.
Law enforcement has identified a distinct pattern among the thieves, who typically operate in pairs or small groups, using two vehicles for a swift escape. Surveillance footage confirms that these thefts can be executed in under two minutes. Investigators have also indicated that "lookouts" for these groups may be armed, increasing the risk for anyone who attempts to intervene.
Despite the uptick in thefts, authorities are still investigating the destination of the stolen parts, including whether they are being sold locally or transported to out-of-state scrapyards. Specific descriptions of the suspect vehicles have not yet been released, but authorities continue to analyze surveillance footage related to the incidents.
In a statement, the sheriff’s office emphasized the potential danger involved in confronting suspects. "Due to the potential risk, citizens are urged not to approach or confront the suspects," the statement read. They further advised that while property can be replaced, human life cannot, and urged immediate contact with 911 in case of a crime in progress.
The investigation into these serial thefts is being led by the Ventura County Organized Retail Theft Task Force. Authorities are seeking any additional surveillance footage or witness accounts to help identify the organized groups involved.
To safeguard their vehicles, residents are advised to take proactive measures such as:
- Securing vehicles: Park in locked garages or well-lit areas whenever possible.
- Adding deterrents: Install motion-activated lights, security cameras, or vehicle alarms.
- Using physical barriers: Consider installing catalytic converter anti-theft cages or etching the vehicle identification number (VIN) onto the converter to hinder resale.
- Reporting suspicious activity: Call 911 for emergencies or contact the Crime Stoppers Tip Line at (800) 222-TIPS for anonymous tips.
As authorities continue to navigate this growing issue, community vigilance remains essential in addressing and preventing further thefts.
