Tragic Accident Claims Life of 13-Year-Old Boy in Garden Grove Electric Motorcycle Incident
GARDEN GROVE, Calif. – A tragic accident claimed the life of a 13-year-old boy on Thursday night after he crashed an electric motorcycle into a center median in Garden Grove. The incident occurred around 9:50 p.m. on Magnolia Street.
According to police reports, the boy, a resident of Santa Ana, was traveling at approximately 35 mph when he lost control and struck the curb. Life360, a location-sharing app, alerted authorities to a potential collision. When officers arrived, they discovered the boy unconscious at the scene. He was subsequently transported to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash, including why the rider veered into the median. They have not yet disclosed the specific make or model of the motorcycle involved, nor whether the boy was wearing a helmet or any other protective gear at the time of the accident. The boy’s identity has been withheld pending notification of family.
This incident is part of a concerning trend involving youth and high-powered electric vehicles in Southern California. In recent weeks, there have been several similar tragedies, including the death of an 81-year-old Vietnam veteran in a hit-and-run incident in Lake Forest involving a 14-year-old on an illegal electric motorcycle. Other reported incidents include the death of a 13-year-old e-bike rider hit by a train in Simi Valley and the arrest of two teenagers in Culver City for reckless driving on electric motorcycles.
In light of these events, Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer characterized the rise of illegal, high-speed electric bikes as a "pandemic," prompting calls for increased parental accountability and stricter enforcement of vehicle regulations. Authorities continue to seek witnesses or video footage to help shed light on what led to Thursday’s collision.
