Tom Steyer’s Ad: Why It Might Not Be Hitting the Mark
Billionaire Candidate Tom Steyer Faces Scrutiny Over Advertising Language
Billionaire gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer is under the spotlight as his campaign spends extensively on advertising across Southern California, having raised over $100 million in campaign funds.
The latest ad features actress and activist Jane Fonda, who highlights Steyer’s commitment to environmental issues and combating rising living costs. However, a particular phrase in the commercial has raised eyebrows. A statement suggests that Steyer "will beat the corporate interests making (Californians’) life unaffordable," leading to some confusion regarding its meaning.
In response to the controversy, Steyer’s campaign clarified to NBC Los Angeles that the sentence structure is grammatically correct, asserting that it is the corporations, not the candidate, that are accused of contributing to Californians’ financial burdens.
Financial disclosures from the California Secretary of State reveal that Steyer has raised approximately $105 million, with the vast majority stemming from his personal funds. These resources have primarily been allocated to television and online advertising.
Other notable campaign fundraisers this quarter include San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, who has raised $13.5 million, and Republican frontrunner Steve Hilton, garnering $4.2 million.
