LAUSD and SEIU Local 99 Agree on a Tentative Deal to Prevent Strike
Tentative Agreement Prevents Planned Strike at LAUSD
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has reached a tentative agreement with SEIU Local 99, the union representing 30,000 essential school workers, just hours before a planned strike. This agreement, announced shortly after 2 a.m. on Tuesday, has effectively averted a work stoppage that would have impacted bus drivers, custodians, cafeteria workers, and special education assistants.
This deal comes on the heels of tentative agreements reached by the district with both its teachers and administrators. Notably, SEIU Local 99, alongside the other unions, had coordinated a joint solidarity agreement, which meant a strike could still take place if negotiations faltered.
The district confirmed the agreement via a statement on its website, saying, “We are pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement in principle with SEIU Local 99 that will allow schools to be open today. LAUSD and SEIU teams will continue to work together to finalize the details of a tentative agreement.”
In recent days, the school district had expressed its commitment to avoiding a strike while preparing for the possibility of its first walkout since 2019. Measures included plans for online learning and food distribution sites. Families were advised to contact their schools if they lacked district-issued devices at home.
As details surrounding the agreement are finalized, the impact of this resolution on LAUSD operations and its employees remains a subject of interest for the community.
