The Rookie Returns for Season 9: What Makes This ABC Drama a Fan Favorite
‘The Rookie’ Renewed for Ninth Season, Finds Success Among Teen Viewers
In a noteworthy leap, ABC’s veteran cop drama The Rookie will return for a ninth season, significantly driven by its newfound popularity among viewers under 18 on TikTok. The renewal positions the series, led by Nathan Fillion and created by Alexi Hawley, as the third longest-running drama on ABC, following Grey’s Anatomy and NYPD Blue. The Rookie is now tied with Dynasty and The F.B.I., both of which also concluded after nine seasons.
As The Rookie gears up for its ninth season, it continues to build momentum, demonstrating impressive viewership trends. The series’ eighth season premiered with notable growth, ranking as its largest debut in terms of streaming. It has also become the top broadcast program among teens in 2025.
“It’s been a great season,” shared Hawley. “I feel that our popularity has never been higher, which is great; we spoke at the beginning of the season about what going to Prague was like in terms of seeing the international appeal of our show as well. I’ve been feeling like we’ve been putting out really strong episodes all season, and people have been showing up.”
The series’ unpredictability appears to attract a loyal audience: “From week to week, the audience really doesn’t know what version of The Rookie they’re going to get. Is it going to be a big fun event in the episode? Is it going to be more comedic or romantic or scary? I like switching things up,” Hawley noted.
Despite a recent shift in its airtime from Tuesdays at 10 PM to Mondays at the same hour, The Rookie has maintained its viewership, with streaming helping to offset any declines in linear ratings. Hawley pointed out that Nathan Fillion’s previous series, Castle, found success in the same time slot for its entire run.
Looking ahead, The Rookie may help launch a new ABC spinoff, The Rookie: North, which is currently in the pilot phase.
Among the contributing factors to The Rookie‘s string of renewals is its cost-effective production. The series has consistently benefitted from a California tax credit, recently receiving $34.9 million for its upcoming season—reportedly its largest incentive yet. This support has helped keep budget cuts at bay, a rarity for long-running dramas today.
Moreover, the show has yet to kill off a main character, an often utilized tactic in long-running series. “I don’t think so,” Hawley stated regarding the potential for shocking character exits. “You never say never. At the end of the day, one of the things that I’ve always tried to lean into in the show is that you have to do the most dramatic thing possible when you can, even if it’s hard on the audience.”
The evolving narrative is particularly exemplified through the fan-favorite couple, Lucy Chen and Tim Bradford, who reconciled after a tumultuous breakup in prior seasons.
Adding to the show’s dynamism, The Rookie employs a shooting schedule of nine days per episode, with five dedicated to on-location filming. This approach has enabled the production to capture authentic narratives while strategically managing costs. Hawley remarked that the show has developed effective ways to balance high-stakes episodes with budget-friendly storytelling.
As the season progresses, audiences can expect more action-packed episodes. The first of the final three episodes of Season 8 premiered on April 13, with more excitement on the horizon.
