Carnahan elaborated, stating, “The film came out of a deeply personal experience that my friend went through, both as a father and in his professional role.” In a January 2026 interview, Affleck explained that the film is grounded in a specific incident involving a Miami officer, where it was possible to receive a portion of confiscated illegal money if one reported its location.
Affleck further recounts, “There was one time they showed up at a house and found $20 million.” He also highlighted the tension surrounding the origin of the money and the fear that the real owners might appear.
Carnahan also drew creative inspiration from a deeply personal and challenging breakup, describing it in a conversation with GQ as a process that helped him channel his experiences into the script.
