The Annual Cost of a Royal Wardrobe and Who Covers the Expenses
- The cost of maintaining a royal wardrobe remains uncertain, with estimates ranging from $50,000 to $200,000 annually.
- Historically, the household budget of King Charles has encompassed clothing worn for official royal engagements.
- Royal family members are generally prohibited from accepting gifts, although they can wear garments on loan from designers or purchase items themselves.
Members of the royal family are held to high fashion standards, which raises questions about the financial implications of their wardrobes.
Catherine, Princess of Wales, has amassed a substantial collection of designer outfits since becoming a duchess in 2011. Her preferred labels include Jenny Packham, Alexander McQueen, and Ralph Lauren. Her sister-in-law, Meghan Markle, also sported a variety of designer pieces during her time as a working royal. This brings forth inquiries regarding the true cost of a royal wardrobe and the sources of its funding.
According to the official website of the royal family, royals are discouraged from accepting gifts from individuals and businesses. However, reports from various media outlets, including Hello! and Vogue Australia, indicate that Middleton’s stylist often borrowed designer items that were subsequently returned after public appearances. Additionally, it is plausible that she and other royals purchase their own clothing—a practice previously noted with Princess Diana prior to her engagement to Prince Charles.
Here’s an overview of the estimated annual costs associated with a royal wardrobe.

A report from 2012 by The Cut revealed that Middleton’s wardrobe update following her 2011 marriage to Prince William cost over $54,000, illustrated by garments from McQueen, Matthew Williamson, and Roland Mouret.
It is important to note that King Charles’s household budget is largely financed by his private estate, the Duchy of Cornwall, prior to its transfer to William in 2022, which covers clothing for family appearances. Furthermore, Middleton’s borrowing of outfits from designers could also play a significant role in the overall cost, as would any expenditures from her and Prince William’s salaries.

Meghan Markle has also attracted attention for her fashion expenditures. Following her May 2018 wedding to Prince Harry, The Daily Mail reported that she spent approximately $207,000 on 15 new outfits. However, this total did not factor in loans, discounts, or dresses she already owned.
In 2017, it was suggested that Middleton had worn clothing valued at about $158,000 as part of her royal wardrobe.

Despite numerous official engagements, royals do not routinely acquire fresh outfits for each event. Observers have noted that Middleton, Princess Anne, and others frequently rewear their favorite pieces, a practice that highlights sustainability alongside prudence.

For instance, the Princess of Wales wore a $20 Zara prairie dress in January 2025 that she had previously donned during visits in 2020, 2021, and 2023. The Princess repeated another ensemble—an Alessandra Rich dress—from 2019 for Charles’s annual Christmas lunch in 2025.
Princess Anne is known for her fondness for reusing outfits. In 2025, she appeared twice in a beige jacket and skirt set debuted in 1987, capturing the attention of fashion enthusiasts. She also surprised fans with a green paisley dress that she first wore in 1971.
Even princesses hit London’s high-street stores.

While royal family members often make headlines for donning prestigious designers such as McQueen, they are also seen shopping at more affordable retailers. Vogue Australia has reported that Middleton has bought clothing from stores like Zara, Gap, and Peter Jones. Affordable pieces often sell out quickly once worn by her, including a $55 red Zara midi dress she wore during a 2020 visit to a children’s center, as highlighted by Kate’s Closet.
In addition to her own shopping, the Princess integrates high-street brands like Gap Kids, H&M, and John Lewis into her children’s wardrobes.
