Taika Waititi Shines as a Villain in This Whimsical Adaptation of a Beloved British Children’s Book at Sundance Film Festival
The Sundance Film Festival showcased the world premiere of Fing! today, a charming Australian-British co-production that has emerged as one of the surprises of the festival.
Adapted from David Walliams’ popular children’s book, Fing! follows a whimsical narrative akin to family favorites such as Paddington and Nanny McPhee. Notably, the film features Walliams himself, alongside Taika Waititi, who takes on the role of the villain, the Viscount.
This adaptation tells the story of 12-year-old Myrtle Meek, portrayed by newcomer Iona Bell. Myrtle, a spirited child with clear desires, creates chaos for her parents, Maureen Meek (Mia Wasikowska) and Christopher Meek (Blake Harrison). When Myrtle expresses her wish for a Fing—a mythical creature from the jungle of Zybra—her father agrees to embark on an adventurous quest to secure one.
Once Christopher finally locates the elusive Fing, it proves to be a reluctant, one-eyed creature. Complicating matters, the Viscount, whose business struggles without the rare creature, sends his Nanny (Penelope Wilton) to capture it as well. Meanwhile, Myrtle’s initial excitement wanes as the Fing wreaks havoc in her home, prompting her to command her parents to return the creature. However, an unexpected bond forms between Myrtle and the Fing, reminiscent of classics like E.T. and Paddington, leading to further misadventures.
As Myrtle’s parents pursue knowledge about the Fing in a rare library book, they face repercussions from the Chief Librarian (Robyn Nevin) for neglecting their duties. The plot thickens when the Viscount intensifies his efforts to seize the Fing, culminating in comedic chaos featuring a daring rescue.
Walliams and co-writer Kevin Cecil infuse the film with a distinct British wit, further enriching the story with the Viscount character, who is an original addition to the screen adaptation. Taika Waititi’s performance draws comparisons to Peter Sellers, showcasing a vibrant blend of humor and eccentricity, while Bell shines in her debut role.
Director Jeffrey Walker helms a visually stunning production, creating a magical world that captivates both younger and older audiences. The film promises enjoyment for families, blending humor and heart.
Fing! is produced by Jo Sargent and Todd Fellman.
