Sylmar’s Remarkable Journey: Riding a 10-Game Winning Streak in the Division II Basketball Playoffs
Sylmar High’s Bort Escoto Breaks Records as Spartans Surge into Semifinals
Bort Escoto is making headlines this season as the longest-serving basketball coach in the City Section, now in his 33rd season at Sylmar High. Under his guidance, the Spartans have achieved a remarkable feat, scoring 100 or more points in four games over the past month.
Sylmar, boasting a record of 18-12, has successfully advanced to the Division II semifinals. They are set to host Marquez, who enters the matchup with a record of 16-14, this Friday.
The Spartans’ offensive charge has been led by standout players Robert Winn and Aiden Garcia, averaging 18.7 and 16.3 points per game, respectively. Andrew Galvez has also contributed significantly, averaging 11.6 points.
Marquez, seeded No. 10, presents a formidable challenge after eliminating the No. 2 seed, Eagle Rock, last week. Key to their success has been heavily recruited football player Elyjah Staples, who has put up impressive numbers in recent games, contributing scoring, rebounding, and leadership.
Escoto has exhibited commendable control this season, having received only one technical foul to date, a marked improvement for the coach.
