NaVorro Bowman Shines in Notre Dame’s Victory Against Crespi: A Basketball Recap
Notre Dame Edges Out Crespi in Heated Mission League Semifinals
In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Notre Dame triumphed over Crespi with an 82-78 victory in the Mission League tournament semifinals on Friday night. The game’s intensity mirrored the fervor of the storied rivalry from the 1980s and 1990s, when packed gyms often required opened windows to alleviate heat generated by excited fans.
The Knights (20-6) secured their place in the championship game against host Sierra Canyon on Wednesday night, thanks in large part to standout junior guard NaVorro Bowman Jr. He sealed the victory by sinking four consecutive pressure free throws in the final 14 seconds of the match.
Crespi (19-11), fresh off a road victory against Harvard-Westlake, posed a daunting challenge for Notre Dame. Holding a 70-67 advantage with just under five minutes left, Crespi’s momentum shifted when Josiah Nance hit a three-pointer, sparking a 10-point run for Notre Dame. A key three-pointer from sophomore Zion Lanier, assisted by Bowman, extended their lead to 77-70, and despite Crespi’s attempts to rally, the Celts were unable to narrow the gap to less than two points.
Bowman showcased his exceptional talent throughout the game, finishing with 32 points, alongside eight rebounds and six assists. "He’s a special player," said Notre Dame coach Matt Sargeant. “He shows up in big moments. He’s super mentally tough.”
Bowman’s performance is no surprise considering his family’s athletic heritage; his father once played in the NFL. After a shaky first half where he missed six shots, Bowman made critical adjustments in the second half, leading his team when it mattered most. "I had to lock in," he remarked on his concentrated effort to excel.
The game was not without drama. A warning was issued to both coaches, Sargeant and Crespi’s Derek Fisher, to maintain their coaching boxes, and disruptions included the ejection of Fisher’s wife from the venue. Nevertheless, both teams delivered an electrifying performance in the second half, filled with back-and-forth scoring.
Isaiah Barnes contributed significantly to Notre Dame’s victory with 24 points, while Cayman Martin added 20 points and Ilan Nikolov chipped in with 19 points.
"This has been a rivalry for years," Bowman said. “It feels good to win twice.” The upcoming championship match will also determine the league’s Most Valuable Player, with Notre Dame’s victory likely securing the honor for Bowman.
In other Mission League outcomes, Sierra Canyon secured a commanding 103-74 win over Loyola, bolstered by 30 points from Brandon McCoy and 23 from Maxi Adams, both of whom were recently named to the McDonald’s All-American Game roster. Mater Dei, JSerra, Cleveland, and Brentwood also notched wins in their respective games, continuing a competitive season across the league.
