Steve Coogan Shares Insights on His Role in ‘The White Lotus’ and Helena Bonham Carter’s Departure
EXCLUSIVE: Actor Steve Coogan has disclosed that his decision to join the cast of The White Lotus for its fourth season was heavily influenced by the creative vision of Mike White, particularly his appreciation for cult British indie films.
Coogan expressed his admiration for White’s work, revealing that he has been captivated by the director’s projects since watching Chuck & Buck in 2000. “I always thought I’d love to work with him,” he stated, noting that he has viewed all three previous seasons of The White Lotus.
This enthusiasm appeared to be reciprocal. Coogan, a BAFTA nominee for his role in the BBC comedy How Are You? It’s Alan (Partridge), shared that White is a follower of Michael Winterbottom’s 24 Hour Party People, a 2002 film chronicling the Manchester music scene. White is also an admirer of Coffee and Cigarettes.
In a recent interview, Coogan spoke about his experience filming The White Lotus in the South of France, noting, “I think I’ve slotted right in. I’m really enjoying it. He’s quite collaborative. He lets you embellish and improvise, and I’m in my comfort zone.”
Coogan also commented on the creative process surrounding his character’s development. “It just went in a different direction,” he explained. “Sometimes you find that something isn’t working the way you want it to, in terms of the character and the dynamic of the whole story. So that was just a mutual decision … The whole part was rewritten from scratch.”
He further addressed the surprise exit of Helena Bonham Carter from the season, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the show’s production.
