Selena Gomez, who has been a close friend of Taylor Swift for many years, recently revealed that she serves as a muse for the pop superstar. During an appearance on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast, Gomez confirmed long-held fan theories that a track from Swift’s Evermore is inspired by their friendship.
“I can confirm that ‘Dorothea’ is about me,” Gomez said, sharing insights about the song’s emotional depth. She also noted that Swift has another song about their bond tucked away in her vault. “There’s this song Taylor wrote about us, and it was called ‘Family,’” she added. “It was basically saying, ‘You have these amazing dreams, you want to be in movies — like, in every crowd I still see you.’ Now when I listen to that song, both of those things have happened for us. It’s really sweet because back then, she was just, like, ‘I wrote this song about us. It was just our story, kind of.’”
On “Dorothea,” which debuted in 2020 alongside Swift’s Folklore follow-up, the lyrics describe an old friend who rises to fame “selling dreams, selling makeup and magazines.” With lines reflecting her journey from launching the Rare Beauty brand to starring in films like Emilia Perez, many fans have speculated that Gomez was indeed on Swift’s mind during the song’s creation.
Gomez expressed a profound connection to her best friend’s songs, rooted in their teenage friendship. “I feel like a lot of moments — huge moments — that were self-defining, from relationships to family to love to hate, all of it in between, we were figuring it out,” she said. “I was 15 and she was 18, and we didn’t really know what was going on, and so we’ve never seen each other any differently. I’m so impressed with how eloquently it’s put.”
Gomez also shared details about an impressive painting Swift created for her 30th birthday—a scene illuminating their respective star signs. Gomez’s husband, Benny Blanco, remarked that he initially believed the artwork was produced by a professional artist. Reflecting on their journeys, Gomez expressed admiration for what they have both managed to achieve. “It’s more so, like, ‘Wow, we survived it — as best we could,’” she reflected.
